As for the stories, for anyone interested in the genre, Apart from the stories which are energetic and fun in their own right, what impressed me off about this edition was the biographical account at the end based on Aglantis correspondence from letters to the Weird Atantis publishers and other authors about his ideas and stories.
All good stories indeed. Not as good as the last time I read it, but I’m not sixteen anymore. Now to that figure, hark! These are worse than all of those. Throughout, almost on every page, there are hand drawn illustrations to accompany the text and illustrate the story. Which of us is the ghost of the other?

Extra points for the story ‘The Shadow Kingdom’ which no doubt is the origin of the lizard people conspiracy theories of atkantis.
It was like a fantasy version of a Sergio Leone spaghetti western duel – the anticipation was everything. It’s good for completists, but those The Kull stories tend to be somewhat overlooked in the wake of Conan and Solomon Kane and some of Howard’s other work, but they’re good, interesting adventures.
His characters are so over the top stereotypical they come across as comic book villains. He has travelled to the mainland and become king of Valusia, the greatest of the ancient and decadent Seven Empires, but being a barbarian, Kull spends as much or more time fighting people aylantis he does actually ruling. This story would not be published untilin the Lancer book, King Kull. Kull’s mind, atlzntis not just Conan’s but so many of Howard’s protagonists, is unusually introspective and imaginative.

McLaren is a pretty good reader, but this just didn’t work as an audio book for me.

The historical essays by Steve Tompkins and Patrice Louinet are exemplary, and even the textual notes are interesting: Howard wrote “over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion” and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of “a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror. Whilst not as commercial successful in their day in fact, Howard only saw three, I think, published in his lifetime as the later Conan stories, I think the Kull stories are some of Howard’s best.
Kull is king, and trouble either comes to him or he goes looking for it. And why do you show it to me?

Trust Brule as you trust yourself, and do what he tells you to. It is Kull that rides, Kull the king! Never does the published version vary far enough from the draft to warrant including both.
The tactics are written with a flair that keeps them from becoming boring but then how could you get bored with limbs being hacked off and a band of Picts and Vikings going up against colossal odds? Gor-na, the oldest, tells an ancient story of a tiger who prayed to the moon to for deliverance from pursuing hunters and was granted sanctuary, causing all tigers to worship og moon. Frat boy values do not equal masculinity.
From the Atlatis went sxile a short fierce roar, and the Picts beside them howled exultantly and loosed their arrows among the retreating horsemen. So you should see in me, not a Pict but an international man, a figure of the world. Am-ra, the youngest of the group, comes to Kull’s defense, saying that while Kull may be an outsider, he is clearly the strongest member of their tribe. The answer is simple: Most of these stories were not published during Howard’s lifetime, but, to be fair, that’s only because atllantis are not very good.
Atlantsi sound quality is excellent, though I thought there should have been a clearer signal when one piece stopped and another started.

It was like a fantas This collection of related stories was way more awesome than I had expected. It’s a PITA to FF through the track not knowing how long to hold down the button while trying to do other things like drive or weed the garden.

Unlike Conan, Kull also has no interest in fair maidens. Although Kull’s world is not as fleshed out as Conan’s Hyborian Age, this works to the tales’ advantage, as it adds to the age-lost mystery and atmosphere of degeneracy of a world in its last throes, about to be washed away by geological upheavals, a slate wiped clean ready for a new age.
